Valentina

SYNOPSIS

Valentina, a 17-year-old transsexual girl, moves to a small village in the Brazilian countryside with her mother, Márcia, leaving her old life behind. Trying to avoid being bullied, Valentina enrolls in a new high school with her current name, maintaining extreme confidentiality towards her classmates and teachers. However, the young girl , with her mother , finds herself having to deal with yet another bureaucratic quibble: in the school direction, both parents need to sign to ensure that Valentina can regularly enroll at the institution with the actual name she identifies with today. And the father, with whom she has not had relations for a long time, is constantly unreachable.

jury comment

"With a special mention, we award this film, noting how once again the Brazilian Cinematography knows how to use trans adolescence as a point of observation of the complexities and injustices of the world. An extraordinary cast takes us into a story of fine and powerful human tensions, chiseled by a direction, a screenplay and a photography that fluidly lead us into an immersive reality, constantly moving us. Valentina shows a provincial reality as a place that is yes asphyxiated and violent, but also capable of solidarity and alliances, starting with the school, teachers and classmates. Valentina also tells us about a mother-daughter relationship that is authentic and sweet, supportive and listening: an exemplary reality of how one can break the chain of violence derived from the nuclear non-acceptance of one's own identity originality. Transsexuality becomes again a metaphor for adolescence as a whole and our urgent need to become ourselves."
