CAER

SYNOPSIS

Caer is a collaborative and experimental documentary that uses both fictional and traditional observation methods to describe the struggles for recognition and justice of Latin American trans women working in the NYC sex industry. The two protagonists, Rosa and Paloma, are filmed while fighting transphobic violence and persecution by the police, defending their cases of trafficking in a political environment (that of the United States) that is increasingly anti-migration. Caer is also a true tribute to the work and legacy of Lorena Borjas, mother of the Latin American trans community of Queens, who, unfortunately, passed away in March 2020: she was among the first victims of COVID-19.
The movie is the result of the collaboration between Nicola Mai and the Transgrediendo Intercultural Collective, an association that defends the rights of Latin American trans migrant women in Queens (NYC).

jury comment

"This movie, which is the result of the collaboration between Nicola Mai and the Transgrediendo Intercultural Collective, wins the 2021 edition of “Divergenti Internazionale Cinema Trans” for its refined cinematographic language, which mixes fiction and documentary with the sole purpose of making us part of a powerful story. It narrates the story of an exemplary community which, through solidarity, opposes (with the force of bodies and relationships) the violence of migration laws and police repression against prostitution. Caer wins for the ability to bring us back into a widespread history, which reminds us of the struggles and human cohesion of the trans movement, through the method of one of the noblest traditions of the documentary. A political and poetic movie that acts as a warning and a reminder of a reality that is also present in Italy. Caer translates as being caught. This movie exists in the context of breaking walls and cages and, for this reason, it wins the eleventh edition of Divergenti."
