Indianara

SYNOPSIS

Indianara defines herself as a parliamentary whore, an atheist, an anarchist, and a vegan. Born as Sergio Siqueira, she decided very early on to become a woman and invented her name in homage to her mother's indigenous origins and to Nara, a transgender friend who supports her. An unclassifiable revolutionary, founder of Casa Nem, a transgender shelter in Rio de Janeiro, a city councilwoman along with Marielle Franco, Indianara continues her fight against prejudice and machismo.

jury comment

We award Indianara the Honorable Mention for the penetrating look, without rhetoric, in recounting the life of a great contemporary activist and her courageous project of human and political alliance in Bolsonaro's Brazil. The struggles, the complicities between friends, all the way to the violence of history that breaks through: Indianara is a hymn to resistance through the love that holds communities together. A work that does not reject contradictions, but rather injects them all into the vital movement that points to a freer and more just world."
