Sunken Plum

SYNOPSIS

Sunken Plum is the authentic story of a trans artist who performs among nightclub tables in the city of Chengdu. At a time of severe professional crisis, she is approached by her cousin who has come all the way to the city to remind her of her mother's funeral.

Li Wanying has no intention of returning, although as the only son of the family she is forced to do so. Keeping her identity hidden, she decides to return, considering the possibility of finding the inheritance her mother has kept for her.

The confrontation with the community of her native village puts a strain on her emotionality. But, through a dreamlike journey of growth, she will emerge strengthened and rewarded.

jury comment

"We award Sunken Plum the honorable mention for the poetry that reflects itself through the tension between the almost unknown realities of rural China and the contemporary. An interweaving of life and dream that chronicles the difficult universal process of healing wounds, setting it in a community still as much oppressed as the trans Chinese community."
